Between two bike sizes: should I size up or down?
Keep overlapping sizes on your shortlist and compare the actual bikes before deciding.

If two sizes cover your measurements, keep both as candidates. There is no universal rule to size down for sport or size up for comfort. Compare the exact chart, achievable riding position and control on each bike.
Sign in to open frame sizing and save your shortlist.
An overlap can be part of the chart
For example, the Giant Contend AR 1 source linked below publishes size S for 165–175 cm and M for 171–181 cm. A rider who is 173 cm tall sits inside both height bands. This example belongs to that exact listing; it does not apply to all Giant bikes.
That height overlap does not choose the better bike. The source does not publish an inside-leg range for those rows, so it cannot establish clearance from height alone.
Keep paired measurements together
Where a manufacturer publishes both height and inside-leg ranges, your measurements need to fit the same published pair. Do not combine the height band from one row with the inside-leg band from another.
An open-ended band, a missing range or conflicting measurements needs confirmation. Repeating the measurement is more useful than stretching a chart to include you.
Compare the position you can actually achieve
Check the supplied stem, bars, seatpost and their adjustment limits. Frame stack is the frame’s vertical dimension to the steering-tube position; reach is the horizontal dimension. Neither includes the whole handlebar setup. Two different frame labels can still require very different parts to achieve a similar position.
For TT bikes, compare pad stack and reach using the correct cockpit hardware. For mountain bikes, include standing clearance and the dropper setup. For everyday bikes, prioritise getting on and off and reaching the brakes in your normal clothing.
Try both before choosing where possible
Use the same shoes, similar setup and the riding position you expect to use. Ask which adjustments or parts would be needed on each candidate, and include those in the buying decision. Confirm any try-out or return arrangement before paying.
Everyday Bike Fit can keep multiple bikes and sizes on a shortlist. It does not turn a height overlap into a guarantee or measure every aspect of handling.
